My day skiing at Cardrona (and other things I did in Queenstown)
On September the 10th, I was very lucky to go to Cardrona to ski, on such a nice and beautiful day. The weather was perfect and the skiing conditions were great. Cardrona is an area halfway between Queenstown and Wanaka, in southern Otago, in the south island of New Zealand.
We got up very early in the morning and drove from Queenstown to Cardrona. It took slightly more than half an hour to finally reach the ski field. I was booked for a half day ski lesson. Additionally, I was also given a pass as part of the package deal to ski up the mountain.
The ski lesson was very interesting and fun and I was put on the intermediate level. It was easy and I was able to ski down the mountain (with the instructor) without falling over! The instructor also taught us how to do turns down the mountain and even jump while skiing! I had jumped a few times. We went on the slope three times on different routes (we did the hardest one at the end) before we stopped for lunch finally. My mum had the opportunity to take photos of me skiing.
After lunch, because the ski ticket allowed me to ski on my own, I was able to get on the ski lift and ski as many times I wanted down the mountain within the day (I had done 3 rounds) and I skied a further 3 times down the mountain, only falling over twice in one ski run down the mountain. The views from the top of the mountains were incredible and breathtaking and in addition it was my first time ever skiing down alone.
Finally, the day came to an end and after at least 5 to 6 rounds of skiing alone, I decided to call it a day. I packed up and returned the gear. We then left the ski field and went back to the hotel, where we were treated to complimentary mulled wine, with the vouchers the hotel gave us.
It was the end of the skiing day for me, but not the end of the trip. We still had a few more days down south - in Queenstown - and I went on the Zipline the next day by AJ Hackett, a NZ company known for their bungy jumps and their swings and the catapult. Additionally, I did the Jet Boat which took us around Queenstown lake, and a bit into the river, then we went to the ice bar down in the city centre in Queenstown which I drank a cocktail in minus 7 degree temperatures out of a cup made of nothing but ice, something which I have never done before. The ice bar was surrounded by beautifully made ice sculptures. I had time to enjoy myself in Queenstown before we made our way back to Auckland, back home.
